Harry Morton was the son of James and Sarah Morton of Foredraft Street, Cradley, and his wife was Amelia, later Smith. He was an early volunteer in 1914 for the Worcesters and joined the 9th (Service) Battalion. They were in training for nearly a year and were then sent out to Gallipoli to break the stalemate on the peninsula. They landed successfully on the 6th August and attempted to seize the crest of the ridge. They were close by the 10th but were driven off by the defenders. Private Harry Morton was killed in action on this day. He was 35 years of age and is commemorated on the Helles, Cradley and Halesowen Memorials.
