William Nicholls was born in Oldswinford and lived with his parents, William and Anne, who later moved to Smethwick. He enlisted in the Life Guards and joined the 1st Battalion in the 3rd Cavalry Division. In 1915 they served at Ypres and Loos. In 1916 they seemed to have been used in smaller detachments in the front line and in this way Trooper William Nicholls was wounded, possibly in the 1916 Battle of the Somme. He was sent to a Casualty Clearing Station at Rouen and died there on the 24th October. He is buried in St. Sever Military Cemetery, Rouen, (B 12 1). He was 19 years of age and he is commemorated on the Stourbridge and St. John's church Memorials.
