Albert Pardoe was born in Wollescote and attended Wollescote school. He enlisted in the Welsh Guards who fought with valour in the Guards Division during all the main battles on the Western Front. In October 1917 the Division occupied the left wing of the British position in Flanders and was called upon for the third phase of the Third Battle of Ypres. A major advance towards the Houthulst Forest was planned for the 9th October as part of the Battle of Poelcapelle and the Welsh Guards were held back for the second stage of the advance. The 9th October attack went well but rain and mud hampered the second stage on the 12th. The Welsh suffered few casualties but these included Private Albert Pardoe. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot,Lye and Wollescote, Lye church and Wollescote school Memorials.
