James Partridge was born in Wollaston and attended the Wollaston schools. He moved to 13 Dennis Street, Amblecote and in 1914 volunteered for the Worcesters. He served in the 14th Battalion (Severn Valley Pioneers), in the 63rd (Royal Nava) Division. They went to the Western Front in early 1916 and fought in the last stage of the Battle of the Somme in the mud of the river Ancre. They took part in the Battle of Arras in April 1917 and then fought in the last stages of the Third Battle of Ypres. They were in the front line for the start of the second battle of Passchendaele which opened on the 26th October in fearful conditions. Casualties were heavy and included Private James Partridge who was fatally wounded.. He is buried in St. Julien Dressing Station Cemetery (III B 4) and commemorated on the Amblecote Memorial.
