Harold Payne enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery and joined the 265th Siege Battery which had been formed in December 1916 at Hartlepool. In 1917 it served during the Third Battle of Ypres and remained in the Ypres sector. The work of the artillery was continuous and he probably died in German counter-battery shelling. Gunner Harold Payne was killed on the 11th December 1917 and is buried in Menin Road South Cemetery (III N 30) and commemorated on the Wordsley Memorial.
