Wesley Phillips lived at 12 Summer Street, Lye, but had moved to South Wales before 1914. He enlisted at Bargoed in January 1915 and was sent to B Battery of the 123rd Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. He went to the Western Front and was posted to the Somme sector. Gunner Wesley Phillips was killed in action on the 3rd February 1916, possibly in an artillery exchange as this part of the front line near Humbercamps was relatively quiet at this time. He was 19 years of age and is buried in Pommier Communal Cemetery (16) and commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
