Wallace Reid was the son of Ernest Reid who conducted a well known and long established business in the area which combined both pawn-broking and coal dealing. He enlisted in the 1st Life Guards and was transferred to the Household Battalion when he went overseas early in 1917, They joined the forces preparing for the April Battle of Arras. Om 1st May they went into the front line at Roeux and carried out a major attack on the 3rd. The village had been transformed into a defensive bastion of the German line and the Battalion suffered very heavily Corporal Wallace Reid was seriously injured and died of wounds on the 5th May. He is buried in Duisans Military Cemetery (V K 35)and commemorated on the Dudley and St. John’s, Kates Hill, Memorials.
