ROUND, Astley James

Royal Berkshire. 13 October 1915

James Round came from Halesowen and attended Halesowen C of E school. He was a volunteer for the Berkshires and went to the 8th (Service) Battalion. They were sent to France in August 1915 and reached the front line by the 8th. They were soon called into action for the Battle of Loos which started on the 25th September. They were quickly called into action for the battle of Loos which started on the 25th September. The first attacks on the enemy line failed with heavy casualties. The last attempt was made in the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt on the 13th October but with an 800 yard advance over open terrain to the heavily defended German line it was another failure. The heavy casualties included Private James Round who is commemorated on the Loos, Halesowen and Halesowen C of E school Memorials.
