SMART, Ebenezer

Machine Gun Corps. 16 January 1917

Ebenezer Smart lived at 36 Angel Street, Stourbridge. He enlisted in the Worcesters before 1914 and probably served at the outbreak of war and during the major campaigns on the Western Front in 1914 and 1915. As a proficient machine gunner he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps when it was set up in 1916. He was posted to the 164th Battalion and it is likely that he would have spent some time in the Battle of the Somme during 1916. At the beginning of 1917 it seems that he was injured and sent to a military hospital near Boulogne. Private Ebenezer Smart died on the 16th January and is buried at Wimereux Cemetery (II C 6A). He was 33 years of age and is commemorated on the Stourbridge and St. John's church Memorials. His brother, Samuel, died on the 4th December 1917.
