SPARKES, Frederick

Worcestershire. 06 August 1915

Frederick Sparkes lived at back 48 High Street, Amblecote, and was employed as a glasscutter at Messrs. Boulton and Mills. He had been a member of the pre-war Volunteers and soon volunteered in 1914 for the Worcesters. He was sent to the regular 4th Battalion who went to Gallipoli in April 1915. Despite their efforts to break through the Turkish lines at Krithia, they did not succeed. To coincide with fresh landings another attempt was made to attack Krithia on the 6th August. The losses were greater than ever and among the killed was Private Frederick Sparkes. He was presumed dead but this was not confirmed for Mrs Sparkes until March 1916. He is commemorated on the Helles and Amblecote Memorials.
