Arthur Taylor was the son of Sarah and John Taylor and he lived with his wife and three children at 12 Waste Bank, Lye. He worked in the colliery of Messrs Harper and Moores. He had three soldier brothers and volunteered in November 1914 for the Worcesters to join the 4th Battalion. They had returned from India and were sent to Gallipoli. They landed successfully on the 25th April 1915 but found Turkish resistance too strong for the capture of the peninsula. A second landing at Suvla Bay was made on the 6th August and the Worcesters were involved in a strong diversionary attack at Krithia. The breakthrough attempt failed with heavy losses, including Private Arthur Taylor who was one of over 700 casualties on this dire day, most of them killed in action. He was 31 years of age and is commemorated on the Helles, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
Commemorated at:
Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, Stourbridge West Midlands, United Kingdom
