William Waterhouse was born in Birmingham and was the son of William and Lillian Waterhouse of Back 77 New Canal Street, Birmingham. He was possibly working in Lye when he volunteered for the Worcesters. He was sent to the 9th (Service) Battalion who, after training for nearly a year, were sent to Gallipoli to break the stalemate on the peninsula. They landed successfully on the 6th August and attempted to seize the crest of the ridge. It was a fierce fight and, although they were close by the 10th, they were driven off by the Turkish defenders. Private William Waterhouse was killed in action on the 11th August and is commemorated on the Helles, Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
Commemorated at:
Lye / Wollescote Cemetery, Stourbridge West Midlands, United Kingdom
