WESTWOOD, Arthur

Worcestershire. 02 May 1917

Arthur Westwood came from Halesowen and enlisted in the Worcesters, joining the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front. By 1916 they had been consistently active since 1914 and were fully involved in the Battle of the Somme. In the Spring of 1917 they left the Somme for Arras and went into the front line facing the German outposts of the Hindenburg Line near Croisilles. A fierce attack on the 23rd April was followed by counter-attacks and Private Arthur Westwood was killed in action on the 2nd May. He is commemorated on the Arras and Halesowen Memorials.
