WHITE, John

Worcestershire. 17 April 1918

John White attended Cradley C of E School and volunteered in 1914 for the Worcesters. He joined the 2nd Battalion and by 1918 he had fought in all the main battles and come through three years of hard and dangerous warfare. The battalion was stationed near Ploegsteert and faced the full weight of the German second Spring Offensive starting on the 9th April. The Worcesters were driven back from their trenches and fought bravely at Neuve Eglise, but they were severely outnumbered. Losses were high and among them was Private John White. He was killed in action on the 17th April and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert, Cradley, Halesowen and Cradley C of E School Memorials.
