Samuel Willetts was the son of William and Juliana Willetts of Cradley and the husband of Laura Willetts who lived at 47 Attwood Street, Wollescote. He volunteered for the Worcesters and was sent to the 3rd Battalion. After their dramatic actions in 1914 the Worcesters had been situated in Flanders near the Lys. They fought in the Second Battle of Ypres and were successful in protecting their front line during the battle of Loos. In March 1916 they moved to Vimy Ridge and were engaged in close encounters and much mining against a determined enemy. They were particularly involved in fighting around Broadmarsh Crater. Private Samuel Willetts was killed on the 14th May on the Vimy Ridge and is buried in Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont St Eloi (I K 15). He was 35 years of age and is commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
