WINWOOD, Albert

Worcestershire. 28 April 1916

Albert Winwood lived at 65 Birmingham Street, Stourbridge, and volunteered in 1915. He joined the Worcesters and was posted to the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front. This battalion was involved in much fighting during 1915 in the Spring battle at Festubert in Artois and in the Autumn at Loos. They were in the second line on the 25th September and, when the first line was repulsed, attacked on the second day, only to suffer heavy losses. In early 1916 they were in a quiet sector near Béthune. However, those in the trenches always had to endure enemy shelling and of the two men of the battalion killed in April one was Private Albert Winwood. He was 20 years of age and was buried in Cambrin Church Cemetery Extension (K 7) and commemorated at St. John's and the Methodist Church.
