Bernard Wood was married and living at 32 Brettell Lane and was a glass worker. He volunteered in May 1915 for the Worcesters and joined the 4th Battalion during the gruelling Gallipoli campaign. After the evacuation in January 1916 he was soon transferred to the 3rd Battalion on the Western Front at Vimy. It was crater fighting in this part of the line and quite different from Gallipoli. A notable crater was named Broadmarsh crater and was the subject of considerable contest. After a successful enemy attack the Worcesters were sent in on the 22nd May and regained the territory by bomb and bayonet but among the casualties was Private Bernard Wood who was killed in action during what was his first visit to these trenches. He was 29 years of age and is commemorated on the Arras and Amblecote Memorials. Memorial Notice ‘ever remembered by his loving wife, brother-in-law and family at Tutbury’.
