Harold Wood was the son of Enoch and Sarah Wood of 139 Stourbridge Road, Lye, and he enlisted in the King's Shropshire Light Infantry. He joined the 6th (Service) Battalion in the 20th (Light) Division. They moved to France in June 1915 and were in quiet locations for the rest of that year until planning for the 1916 Battle of the Somme started. They were ordered to move from Flanders to the Somme in June but just before the move south Private Harold Wood was wounded. He was taken as a casualty to Vlamertinghe west of Ypres where he died on the 25th June 1916. He was 22 years of age and is buried in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery (II E 17). He is commemorated on the Lye and Wollescote and Lye church Memorials.
