Lewis Parry was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Parry and was born in Wolverhampton. In 1914 he was married to Sarah, later Heath of 41 Fulwood Green, Holly Hall, Dudley, and enlisted in the South Staffords. He went to the 1st Battalion on the Western Front who in 1916 were engaged in the Battle of the Somme from the first day on the 1st July when they captured Mametz. They were transferred to the Ypres Salient in September for the continuing Third Battle Ypres. By this time the British had progressed along the Menin Road as far as Gheluvelt and a major attack was launched on the 26th October.
