TONKS, Harold

Worcestershire. 09 October 1917

Harold Tonks was the son of Mrs Martha Tonks of 46 Amblecote Road, Brierley Hill. He volunteered for the Worcester Territorials and served in B Company of the 1/7th Battalion. They went to France on the 31st March 1915 and served in quieter locations until the 1916 battle of the Somme. They fought in several hard actions and then followed up the German retirement to the Hindenburg Line in the Spring of 1917. They were involved in the Third Battle of Ypres and Corporal Harold Tonks was killed in action on the 9th October in the battle of Poelcapelle. He was 22 years of age and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot and the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
