ASHMAN, Samuel

South Staffordshire. 09 August 1915

Samuel Ashman lived at 10 Angel Street, Dudley, and volunteered for the South Staffords. He went to the 7th (Service) Battalion which was sent to Gallipoli after the stale-mate which had resulted from the first landings. They landed at Cape Helles on the 20th July and after trench experience were part of the Suvla Bay landings on the 6th August. Although the landings were unhindered, the enemy soon began a stern resistance. On the 9th the Staffords were ordered to attack the Anafarta ridge and, despite much bravery, lost very heavily. Private Samuel Ashman was among the many killed in action on that day. He was 37 years of age and is commemorated on the Helles and Dudley Memorials.
