BARNBROOK, Harold

South Staffordshire. 19 November 1917

Harold Barnbrook was the grandson of Selina Maley of 30 Chapel Street, Brierley Hill. He enlisted in the South Staffords and was sent to the 8th (Service) Battalion. During 1917 they had fought at Arras in April and suffered serious casualties. In September they moved to Flanders to take part in the Third Battle of Ypres and were in the front line for the 12th October attack near Pilkem. Ground was gained but the cost was again very high with over 350 casualties. The survivors stayed in or near the front line suffering shelling and sickness. At some point Private Harold Barnbrook was wounded and sent to a Casualty Clearing Station where he died on the 19th November. He was 19 years of age and is buried in Solferino Farm Cemetery (II B 25) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
