Henry Barton was born in Dudley and enlisted before the outbreak of war. He was serving in the 4th Battalion in Burma and returned to England early in 1915. They were then sent out to form the force which landed on Gallipoli on the 25th April. The Turkish army proved to be a more difficult opponent than expected and the Worcesters suffered many casualties from both military action and the fluctuating climate. Withdrawal was decided upon and the Worcesters retired to Cape Helles. The embarkation was a near miracle of deception and was achieved almost without loss on the night of the 12th January. It seems, however, that Private Henry Barton had been wounded and he died at sea the next day as the ships sailed for Egypt. He is commemorated on the Helles and Dudley Memorials.
