BEDDALL, John

Worcestershire. 09 January 1916

John Beddall lived at 32 High Street, Kates Hill, Dudley and volunteered for the Worcesters. He was sent to the 4th Battalion who joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force which sailed to attack Turkey In March 1915. They landed on the Gallipoli peninsula on the 25th April but in six months of struggle failed to reach the commanding heights. The Worcesters fought four major battles at the village of Krithia and suffered heavy losses. After August the Worcesters moved to Suvla but the terrain forced both sides into trench warfare in the gullies and woods above the bay. It was decided to evacuate the troops and the first evacuation from Suvla was a great success. There were casualties during the second from Helles and these included Private John Beddall. He is commemorated on the Helles, Dudley and St John's church, Kates Hill, Dudley, Memorials.
