BISHOP, John Bernard

Durham Light Infantry. 08 October 1918

John Bishop was the son of Samuel and Hagar Bishop of Pear Tree Villa, 6 Albion Street, Brierley Hill, and was on the staff of Barclays Bank at Brierley Hilll. He enlisted in the final stage of the Great War and was sent to the Durhams in the 25th Division. He joined them in Italy but they returned to the Western Front in September 1918 to face the heavily defended Hindenburg Line extension at Beaurevoir. The first attack of the Division was made on the 5th October and then the Durhams came into the front line for a second attack on the 8th. They went in at 5.20 a.m. and the whole day was very successful. Distant objectives were won at relatively little cost. However, among those killed in action was Private John Bishop. He was 19 years of age and is buried at Beaurevoir British Cemetery (D 3) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
