CARPENTER, William

Worcestershire. 27 August 1915

William Carpenter was born at Lye and by 1914 was living at 43 West Street, Stourbridge. He was one of the earliest volunteers in the Stourbridge area and enlisted in the 9th (Service) Battalion of the Worcesters. After training this battalion was selected for the second phase of the Gallipoli campaign and William Carpenter was promoted to Sergeant. They sailed via Malta and Egypt to Gallipoli and landed in July at Cape Helles for front line experience. They then went ashore without challenge at Suvla Bay on the 6th August. However, progress inland was halted and the crucial summit of the Gallipoli ridge was not reached. Turkish resistance was stubborn and the troops settled down to trench warfare of the most unpleasant kind. Battles were rare but snipers and shells were frequent. Sergeant William Carpenter was killed in action on the 27th August and is buried in the 7th Field Ambulance Cemetery (Special Memorial B 9) and commemorated on the Stourbridge, Wollaston church and St. Thomas's church Memorials.
