Thomas Cartwright was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Cartwright of 6 Bell Street, Brierley Hill and he enlisted as a regular soldier in the 3rd Battalion of the Worcesters just before the outbreak of war in 1914. He was stationed at Aldershot in the British Expeditionary Force and quickly sent to France after the declaration of war on the 4th August. After reaching Mons they were obliged to retreat for 10 days to the Marne. They counter-attacked to the Aisne and then moved immediately to Artois to block the next German attack. They were in the front line for the Battle of Armentières from the 12th October and Private Thomas Cartwright was killed in action on the 15th. He was 19 years of age and is buried in the Guards Cemetery, Cuinchy (IX C 19) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
