CHAMBERLAIN, Albert

Royal Welsh Fusiliers. 20 March 1916

Albert Chamberlain was the son of Alfred and Alice Chamberlain of Brierley Hill and was married to Lucy, later Symonds, of 239 Munitions Houses, Birmingham Road, Dudley. He volunteered on the 7th September 1914 and joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He served in the 2nd Battalion and was severely wounded in April. He recovered at home and returned to his regiment, but in the 1st Battalion, where he was promoted Lance Corporal. In February 1916 they moved to the front line at Fricourt on the Somme and much time was spent in improving the defences. Although it might have been regarded as a quiet sector, there were raids and regular shelling to deal with and on the 20th March Lance Corporal Albert Chamberlain was wounded again. He died of wounds and is buried in Corbie Communal Cemetery (I E 22). He was 29 years of age and is commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
