Rex Couper was the son of Frederick and Olivia Couper of 28 Wilton Road, Upper Shirley, Southampton. He was the brother of Cecil Couper, lessee of the Queens Hall in Brierley Hill. He worked as stage manager of the Hall and was much liked by all. He enlisted in the 1st Dragoon Guards soon after the declaration of war and was one of five brothers serving with the colours. By 1918 he had been transferred to the Royal Engineers and was serving in the Signalling Squadron of the Cavalry Corps. He was apparently suffering an illness, probably influenza, in early August and sent back to 21 Casualty Clearing Station near Doullens where he died on the 5th August. Sapper Reginald Maxwell was 33 years of age and is buried in Wavans British Cemetery (A 1) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials and the Southampton Cenotaph Roll of Honour.
