Charles Dovey was the son of Joseph and Rohannah Dovey of 35 High Street, Quarry Bank. He enlisted in 1917 and went to the 9th Training Battalion. Probably after the first German Spring offensive of 1918 he was sent to the 1/4th Yorkshires to make up their numbers as they suffered heavily in the Battle of St. Quentin at the end of March. The Yorkshires were then called upon again when the second German offensive on the Lys opened on the 9th April. The British forces were driven back to the Kemmelberg and heavy losses sustained. Private Charles Dovey was killed in action on the 12th April. He was 18 years of age and is buried in ANZAC Cemetery, Sailly-sur-la-Lys (II L 3) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
