George Gordon was born in Romsley, Worcs, and was the son of Noah and Esther Gordon of 'Honeybourne', Moor Street, Brierley Hill. He worked in the office of the Round Oak steel works. He was sent to the Honourable Artillery Company (infantry) and served in the 1/1st Battalion. They went to the Western Front in 1916 and served originally as GHQ troops but in April and May 1917 they were engaged in the Battle of Arras and John Gordon was killed in action on the 15th May. Alongside him in the trench was Private Price, also killed, who had been a great ‘chum’ of John Gordon since they worked together at Round Oak. Private John Gordon was 20 years of age and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial and on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
