J.G. Griffiths was born at Harts Hill and volunteered for the South Staffords. He was sent to the 1st Battalion and joined them in October 1915 after their costly battles at Festubert and Loos. For the 1916 Battle of the Somme the battalion was in the front line on the first day, 1st June, and succeeded in taking Mametz. High Wood was difficult in August and at the start of September they were inside Delville Wood. They sustained a series of heavy German attacks and Lance Corporal Griffiths was seriously wounded and made a prisoner of war.
