William Hardwick was the son of William and Hannah Hardwick of Wordsley and he was married to Elizabeth Hardwick of 36 West End, Brockmoor. He enlisted, probably in 1917, and was sent to the Royal Susses Regiment. He was soon transferred to the Army Service Corps where was posted to the Army Remount Depot as a Driver. It is likely that he saw action in the early stages of the Third Battle of Ypres and that he was seriously wounded. He was certainly taken to a base hospital at Le Havre where he died on the 21st August 1917. Private William Hardwick is buried in St Marie Cemetery, Le Havre (62 I H 3) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
