Benjamin Hartland was the son of David Hartland of Brettell Lane, Amblecote, and lived in Amblecote Road, Brierley Hill. He served in the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons before emigrating to Canada. In 1914 he was married and on 22nd September he attested for service in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and after training on Salisbury Plain went to the Western Front with a Canadian contingent. They were based in Artois near Festubert and Private Benjamin Hartland was killed on the 25th May 1915. He was 37 years of age and is buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner (IV G 26) and commemorated on the Canadian National, Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials. His brother, Joseph, died on the 3rd March 1915.
