Sidney Horton was the son of Mrs Mary Ann Fletcher, formerly Horton, of 42 Hill Street, Brierley Hill, and of the late George Horton. He attended Brierley Hill C. of E. School and volunteered in 1914 for the South Staffords. He went to the 8th (Service) Battalion and fter training they went to the Western Front in May 1915 with the 17th Division. They joined the trench line in the Ypres sector south of the city and were in a battle situation from the start. Casualties were taken from snipers, shelling and gas and in the Autumn came incessant rain. They moved to Hooge trenches on the Menin Road and it was here on the 16th November that Corporal Sidney Horton was killed in action. He was standing conversing with two of his regimental officers when he was struck by a stray German bullet and killed. He was 25 years of age and is buried in the Menin Road South Cemetery (II C 16) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
