James Lambert was born in Brierley Hill and volunteered for the Worcesters. He went to the 1st Battalion who were stationed in India in 1914 and returned to Britain to join the newly formed 8th Division. They crossed to France on the 5th November and eventually passed through Armentières to the stabilised front line at Neuve Chapelle. The first major British attack of 1915 took place here starting on the 10th March. It was a fierce struggle for three days and at the end no ground was won. It was followed by a wider Allied attack across the Artois from Aubers ridge to Vimy ridge on the 9th May, The Worcesters were involved at Fromelles but the British forces made no gains. Private James Lambert died of wounds and is buried at Pont du Hem Cemetery, La Gorgue, (V B 18) and is commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
