MAIDEN, Aubrey

Royal Scots. 21 March 1918

Aubrey Maiden was the son of Mr W. and Leonora Maiden of 52 Church Street, Brierley Hill. He enlisted in the Worcesters in July 1915 and was sent to the 2/8th Battalion which fought in most of the major battles from 1916 to 1918. It was disbanded in February 1918 and he was transferred to the 8th Royal Scots in the 51st Division. They had fought at Cambrai in November 1917 and remained nearby at Flesquières, close to the Hindenburg Line. When the first German Spring offensive started on the 21st March their position was strongly attacked by an enemy pincer movement which forced them to withdraw after a day long struggle. Among the heavy losses was Private Aubrey Maiden. He was 19 years of age and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial and the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
