Enoch Malpass was born in Brierley Hill and enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment. He joined the 10th (Service) Battalion in the 19th Division. They took part in the 1916 Battle of the Somme from the first day on the 1st July when they were at La Boisselle. They were in the front line on the 3rd and helped to capture the fortified village with great courage. Most notably, Private Turrall was awarded the Division’s first Victoria Cross. They suffered heavily in the attacks on High Wood and were not involved again until November on the Ancre. In 1917 they were involved in the preparation for the crucial battle of Messines. The Worcesters took part in several large raids near Kemmel in May and it was probably in the course of such a raid that Private Enoch Malpass was killed in action. He is buried in Klein-Vierstraat Cemetery ( I F 11) near Kemmel and is commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
