Edward Newton was born in Brierley Hill and was living in Harts Hill in 1914. He volunteered for the Worcesters and was sent to the 4th Battalion, probably after their return from Gallipoli early in 1916. They were sent to the Somme sector and fought on the first day of the long battle at Hawthorn Redoubt and from then until the capture of Gueudecourt in October. They moved to Arras and fought in the critical battles of April 1917 for Monch-le-Preux and then moved to Flanders for the Third Battle of Ypres. They were in the front line for the Battle of Poelcappelle and attacked in force on the 9th October. They were successful, despite the vile weather, but the losses included Private Edward Newton who was killed in action. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot, Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
