Sydney Packwood was born in Coventry and was the son of Edward and Frances Packwood who were living at 9 William Street, Brierley Hill in 1914. He volunteered for the Worcesters and was sent to the 2nd Battalion in the 33rd Division on the Western Front. In the Battle of the Somme they were engaged in the opening Battle of Albert, followed by actions at Bazentin and High Wood. They were still on the Somme front in February 1917 and shelling was still frequent. Lance Corporal Sydney Packwood was severely wounded and died on the 10th February. He was 24 years of age and is buried in Courcelles au Bois Communal Cemetery Extension (E 12) near Colincamps and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
