PAGE, Arthur

South Staffordshire. 22 April 1917

Arthur Page was born in Brierley Hill and was the son of Samuel and Mary Page of 18 Parkes Road. He enlisted in the Staffordshire Territorials and joined the 2/5th Battalion. They went to Ireland in April 1916 and helped to suppress the disorder following the Easter Rising. They were then sent to the Western Front early in 1917 to support the advance to the Hindenburg Line near Arras. They were in front line trenches at Verguier close to the Line in April and, possibly because a major battle was about to commence nearby, there was much artillery action. Probably as a result of shell-fire Private Arthur Page was killed in action on the 22 April. He was 21 years of age and is buried in Jeancourt Communal Cemetery Extension (II C 10) and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials. His brother, James, served in the same regiment and was killed in 1918.
