Andrew Poston was born in Brierley Hill and was the son of John and Susanna Poston of 70 Bull Street, Brierley Hill. He enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment but was transferred to the 7th Bedfords in the 18th Division. The Bedfords were strongly involved in the 1916 Battle of the Somme and were in the front line at Zillebeke and Sanctuary Wood for the first day of the Third Battle of Ypres on the 31st July. They were still there for the daring attack on Glencorse Wood on the 10th August. Although did not keep all their original gains, the line had been pushed forward. Casualties, however, included Private Andrew Poston. He was 26 years of age and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial and on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
