RICHARDS, George

South Staffordshire. 26 March 1917

George Richards was the son of Mrs George Richards and was married with two children. He was employed at the Earl of Dudley’s furnaces at Level Street, Dudley and volunteered for the South Staffords . He went to the 7th (Service) Battalion who were sent out to Gallipoli and took part in the August 1915 landings at Suvla Bay. After continuing stalemate on the peninsula they were evacuated to Egypt in January 1916 and sent to the Western Front in July. They were in action at Thiepval in September and after losses placed in reserve. In March 1917 Private George Richards returned home for convalescence. He went to the Military Hospital at Wordsley with double pneumonia but died on the 26th March. He was 28 years of age and is buried in a full military funeral in Brierley Hill churchyard and commemorated on Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
