George Simpson was born in Brierley Hill and was married to Mrs A. Simpson and lived at 3 Gem Terrace, Icknield Port Road, Birmingham. He was a glass worker and enlisted in the artillery. He went to the Royal Garrison Artillery, serving in the South Midland Heavy Battery (Territorial Force). A letter to his parents illustrated the difficulties with stampeding horses. ‘One knocked me down and kicked at me. I put up my hand to save my head: had I not done so, I should have been killed,’ In the last stage of the war Trooper George Simpson was severely gassed and sent home to Sunderland Hospital where he appeared to improve. A telegram was sent to his mother who caught the midnight train immediately but he died on her arrival on the 31st October 1918. He was given a full military funeral and is buried in Brierley Hill churchyard and commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
