SIVITER, Howard

Lincolnshire. 08 October 1918

Howard Siviter lived at Old Hill and attended Ebenezer Baptist chapel. In 1914 he was living with his wife, Myra, at 42 Bent Street, Brierley Hill, and working at the Moor Lane works of the Stourbridge Glazed Brick Co. He volunteered for the South Staffordshire Regiment but was transferred to the Lincolnshire Regiment, probably towards the end of the war. He served in the 2nd Battalion which was in the 21st Division by 1918. It was involved in almost all the main battles of this important year from the three German Spring offensives to the Advance to Victory. On September 29th they broke through the Hindenburg Line near St. Quentin and began the serious advance in pursuit of the German army. The first villages were cleared and on the 8th October a major attack was made on the enemy who still kept some powers of resistance. Large numbers of prisoners were taken after a stiff contest in which the Lincolns suffered casualties. One of these was Private Howard Siviter. He was 37 years of age and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial and on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
