SMITH, George

George Smith lived at 4 Court, 1 High Street, Kates Hill, Dudley and attended the Claughton School. He volunteered in 1914 and joined the 2nd Battalion of the Worcesters. In the Spring of 1915 he joined the Battalion on the Western Front in Artois and became familiar with the mining villages around Cuinchy and Vermelles. The biggest battle of 1915 took pace nearby at Loos. It opened on the 25th September with some valiant but unsuccessful charges against the German defences. The Worceseters took part in the second series of attacks but suffered heavy losses. Among them was Private George Smith who was killed in action on the 15th and is commemorated on the Loos, St. John's, Kates Hill and Claughton School Memorials.
