SUTTON, Harry

Yorkshire. 02 April 1917

Harry Sutton was born in Brierley Hill and was the son of Walter Sutton of 28 New Street, Brierley Hill. He served originally in the East Yorkshire Regiment, possibly before 1914. He was transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment in the 30th Division. They fought in the 1916 Battle of the Somme and were engaged in the opening Battle of Albert and in the taking of Montaubon. In 1917 they followed up the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line and in an action near Arras on the 2nd April Private Harry Sutton was killed. He was 23 years of age and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial and on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
