TURLEY, Edward

Worcestershire. 07 June 1915

Edward Turley was the son of Enoch Turley and Harriet of 48 Albion Street, Brierley Hill, and was employed at the Stourbridge Glazed Brick Company. He volunteered for the Worcesters in September 1914 giving his age as 20, although he had not reached the age of 18 and he served in the 4th Battalion. They were ordered to Gallipoli as part of the expeditionary force against the Turkish Empire and landed at Cape Helles on the 25th April. Edward Turley seems to have been wounded in the initial attack and was sent to a Military Hospital in Malta. A letter, reported in the County Express, from the Matron on the 5th June to his mother said that his condition had deteriorated and added, ‘For a lad, he’s such a child almost, it seems wonderful to think of him giving his life for his country’. He died of wounds on the 7th June and is buried in the Cappucini Military Cemetery (E 44). He was 18 years of age and is commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
