TURNER, James Henry

South Staffordshire. 25 September 1915

John Henry Turner came from Quarry Bank and volunteered for the South Staffords. He was sent to the 1st Battalion which had suffered considerable losses in the Spring battles in Artois at Aubers Ridge and Festubert. They then prepared for a broader attack in the same sector at Loos. The Staffords suffered heavy casualties when they attacked the canal and the brickworks at Auchy-les-Bassée and Private James Turner was among those killed on the first day, the 25th September. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial and the Brierley Hill, Brierley Hill church and Men’s Bible Class Memorials.
