WALLACE, Herbert

Worcestershire. 12 August 1915

Herbert Wallace lived in Anvil Yard, Cradley, and volunteered in 1914 for the Worcesters. He joined the 9th (Service) Battalion and after training went with reinforcements for the fighting on Gallipoli. The Worcesters landed at Suvla Bay on the 6th August and were virtually unopposed. However, the advance inland was slow and Turkish resistance became strong. In the gullies and ravines of Sari Bair the Staffords failed to reach the vital ridge and on the 12th August Private Herbert Wallace was killed in action. He is commemorated on the Helles, Cradley and Halesowen Memorials.
